Johannesburg First 50 Years – From Shanty Town to World City

 

An Open Class exhibit presenting the discovery of gold in 1886 on the Witwatersrand. Johannesburg would emerge as the centre and grew to the biggest and richest city in South Africa within years. Hosting a world-renowned Empire Exhibition during its Jubilee year in 1936 – the first to be held outside the UK

Rhodesia: The Double Head Issue, Perf 11 printings: 1910 to 1913

 

The Rhodesia Double Head issue was produced to commemorate the Royal Visit of Arthur, the Duke of Connaught to Rhodesia in November 1910. The content deal with the perf 14 printings only and is planned as a chronology of the issue with its relevant information and intrigue.

Railway Philately of South Africa   1867 to 1910

 

An Open Class exhibit presenting pre-Union Railway Philately in South Africa. The development of railways led to the introduction of a uniform postage system. Railway Departments started to issue its own packet labels, stamps, stationery and cancellers operating Postal Agencies/Offices at Railway stations, Travelling Post Offices and Special Mail Trains that resulted in the efficiency of rail-post services

A Traditional Class exhibit analysing the Union of SA revenue stamps and the different usage thereof.

Gold in the ZAR/Transvaal, 1871 to 1922

 

Gold fever spreads to the Transvaal in South Africa during the nineteenth century. The exhibit observes the first discoveries and mining of gold from 1871, the turmoil between Transvaal and British Imperialism, the Anglo Boer War; its aftermath and Labour unrest on the Witwatersrand mines during the first two decades of the 20th century.

The Cape Triangular stamps and their use

 

The 1853 issue, imperforate on Cable watermarked paper, printed by Perkins Bacon, the 1861 Woodblocks on laid paper printed by Saul Solomon in Cape Town and the 1863-1864 issue imperforate on Cable watermarked paper, printed by de la Rue from the Perkins Bacon plates and their use are shown

SAAF Deployment in Korea 1950 to 53

 

The South African contingent was given privilege of free postage while in Korea. However, this was withdrawn in January 1953. Existing internal mail letter cards were overprinted wit 3 or 4 bars obliterating the value tablet an a ‘By Air Mail’ logo was added. ‘FREE FORCES MAIL / POSVRY VANAF MAGTE’ was also added with the postal instructions obliterated and the address of the South African Air Force Liaison Headquarters in the Far East was added.  From January to October 1953 British Forces Letter cards with postage applied were used although civilian stationery was also accepted.

Johannesburg A Window into the Past 1896 – 1903

 

The exhibit explores Johannesburg’s early development through Picture Postcards. It highlights the impact of discovery of gold on the Witwatersrand, tensions between British expatriates (Uitlanders) and the Afrikaner-led ZAR government, activities of everyday life and street scenes depicting traffic flow and buildings.

Queen Elizabeth II, South African Coronation Contingent

 

King George VI dies peacefully in his sleep at Sandringham Estate, Norfolk during the early hours of the morning of Wednesday 6 February 1952. Princes Elizabeth, heir to the throne, and Prince Philip were at Treetops Lodge, Kenya. A reporter informed Prince Philip’s private secretary of the sad news, who informed his Princess Anne and that she was the Queen of Great Britain. Her coronation took place on 2 June 1953.

Union of South Africa: 1935 SILVER JUBILEE OF KING GEORGE V

 

The Union of South Africa’s 1935 Silver Jubilee stamps were part of an Empire-wide issue commemorating King George V’s accession to the throne.  They were the third commemorative issue by the Union in 25 years and were issued on 01 May 1935.  (Official Jubilee day was on 06 May).

This exhibit describes the production (printing), major and minor flaws of the four values (½d, 1d. 3d and 6d), isolated errors and plating.
